Getting Started
Some BMX riders have specialised BMX bikes and clothing, but you don’t need that to get started. Get going with the following items and upgrade as you gain experience.
|
§ Bike: Whatever you have is fine to start with. You can use a mountain bike, a regular kid’s bike, a BMX race bike, a cruiser, or a stunt BMX bike (please take off the pegs for racing). Some of our best riders started off on trainer wheels! |
|
|
§ Helmet – whatever you have |
§ Long sleeve sweatshirt or similar |
|
§ Long pants |
§ Socks over the ankles |
|
§ Shoes |
§ Gloves (gardening gloves or similar are fine) |
The Club has some bikes and helmets that you can borrow while you are at the track. You are welcome to use these at club meets to get you started until you get your own (first in first served).
Young Riders:
Kids start as young as 3 years old. All riders 7 years or younger can join Kiwi Sprockets, which covers all riding up to the nationals. Kiwi Sprockets get training in BMX basics and ride with other riders of similar abilities. 7 year olds may join Kiwi Sprockets depending on when their birthday is.
Club races and training:
Anyone can come along to our club nights on Tuesday evenings at Kyle Park from 5pm from September until April- check the web page. Initially there is no need to be a club member, just join in. Sometimes we have low key racing with the emphasis on fun. Most Tuesdays there is coaching. All abilities are catered for as we work on gate starts, race strategy and fitness. While coaching is mainly for club members, we cater to non-members if we can.

Racing events:
The Mainland North Region consists of 5
clubs,
Novelty races: These events are run on our track and at other clubs. They are not run under BMX rules, so club members can sometimes participate without being registered.
Interclub races: These events are run on our track and at other clubs. Unlike novelty races, they are run under BMX rules, so riders must be registered as a Kiwi Sprocket, or with a full race licence. These are usually on Sunday mornings at one of the local clubs
